Apalit, Pampanga Philippines [3/20/2016] The lobby of ADD Convention Center is filled with happy and eager donors as the quarterly mass bloodletting started early morning. At about 8 a.m. a total of 225 people registered but only 159 made it. 52 did not pass due to low blood count.

One pint of blood will save 3 lives. Blood cannot be manufactured, they are given by willing volunteers and passed through extensive examination.

Ms. Jane Aron,  who arrived early had sentimental reasons for donating blood. Her brother is a regular recipient of blood from blood banks.

“Kaya ko talaga gustong gusto mag donate ng dugo kasi yung kuya ko regular na humihingi kami ng dugo sa blood bank at para makatulong din naman sa ibang nangangailangan ng dugo kaya nag donate ako. Mas maraming benepisyo yung makukuha ng isang blood donor. Malaking tulong, hindi lang doon sa mga taong natutulungan mo o masasagip ang buhay dahil nga nangangailangan sila ng dugo. Malaking tulong din ito dun sa part ng donor dahil mas nagiging healthy kasi napapalitan naman ang dugo. “ – Ms. Jane Aron

Dr. Ian Tristan Perez Vergara, PBC Medical Officer 3 imparts what blood donation means to every human body. Philippine Blood Center ties up with ADD Foundation International for the quarterly event nationwide.

“Blood donation improves immune system. It lessens the risk of cancer and stroke or heart attack. Siyempre, meron kang overall feeling na nakatulong ka sa tao. Sa isang bag, nakakatulong ng 3 tao. Nakaka promote ng ‘happy hormones’ na tinatawag. Endorphins yun. Parang masigla ka, happy ka, maganda yung feeling.” 

“Pag pinapasok yung needle, may konting sakit. Pero pag nasa loob na rin ng ugat, okay na, may manhid na kaya hindi dapat na matakot. Tsaka pag naisip nila na nakakatulong sila sa ibang tao, mayroon kasing mga tao na sobrang active, lifestyle nila, mahilig na mag ehersisyo at the same time, nagba blood dontation, parang young looking at ang ganda ng glow sa mukha, sa balat, nare-replenish yung old RBC’s natin pag gumagawa yung bone marrow ng mga batang RBC na nagsu-supply ng good oxygen sa iba’t ibang parte ng katwan. Yun ang maganda.”

 

Ideal blood donation

Ang ideal is between 12 weeks to 4 months para at least hindi maging anemia. Hintayin natin na mag mature yung mga bagong gawang RBC. Para mapalitan fully yung idinonate na mapalitan yung bone marrow fully kaya may ganung sets ng pagdo donate.

Donating blood is beneficial to our body but it also means saving other lives. One bag means 3 lives. Donate blood now and make a difference.

MILAN band, Perfection, says Zeca Petry

 

Pampanga, Philippines. [March 15, 2016].  Filipino band MILAN is slowly making waves in Brazil, particularly in Sta. Catarina, Florianopolis. At an ordinary Saturday, an unexpected guest came at the Restaurant. Zeca Petry,  guitarist of the famous band Expresso Rural, he heard a band singing live and caught his attention. They were performing Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen.

He even took a video and shared it in his own Facebook account.

Neste sábado, passeando pela Jurerê Internacional, passei em frente a um restaurante (Carvalho’s) que estava meio vazio mas a música vindo do interior me chamou a atenção. Eram clássicos mundiais dos Beatles, Bee Gees, Queen etc e fiquei impressionado ao ver que estava sendo executado por uma banda ao vivo. O restaurante é comandado por Filipinos e todos os músicos também são Filipinos. Ao final da apresentação (tocam das 20h as 22h) o pequeno público que frequentava o restaurante aplaudiu de pé com gritos de “Bravo” (meu inclusive). Confesso que nunca vi nada parecido em restaurantes na cidade e merece ser divulgado. Segue aqui uma amostra de Bohemian Rhapsody do Queen. Incrível a qualidade sonora e o talento dos caras

(Saturday strolling through the Jurerê International, I passed in front of a restaurant (Carvalho‘s) which was half empty but the music from inside caught my attention. World classics were the Beatles, Bee Gees, Queen etc and I was impressed to see that was being performed by a live band. The restaurant is run by Filipinos and all musicians are also Filipinos. At the end of the presentation (play 20h 22h) few audiences inside the restaurant gave a standing ovation with shouts of “Bravo“ (my own included).  I confess that I‘ve never seen anything like it in restaurants in town and deserves to be disclosed. Formerly known as Bl@h, their hit song Lasngag  this band from Bicol had already gained followers through their all-out performances. An energetic vocalist that is often compared to Jim Morrison. When Bl@h was disbanded, he again formed another one by the name of HAMMILAN. From then on, they had created hits like  Gandang Kupas, and the album entitled Diskarte.

Registration will start at 8 a.m. up to 3 p.m.

 

Why donate my blood?

People nowadays are very busy and never realize that they are already neglecting their own health. A day to spare to donate blood is one of the simple steps to find out your possible illnesses and an early detection. A potential donor goes through different tests to qualify.

 

Iron is bad?

In an article by Dr. Mercola entitled Take Control of Your Health, researchers explained,

“Because high body iron stores have been suggested as risk factor for acute myocardial infarction, donation of blood could theoretically reduce the risk by lowering body iron stores.”

 Farlex Medical dictionary describes ‘infarction’ wherein an area of tissue necrosis caused by impairment of arterial or venous blood supply due to mechanical factors or blood pressure alterations.

 Some of the illness that the body would face having high levels of iron in the body includes cirrhosis, liver cancer, cardiac arrhythmias, Alzheimer’s disease, type 1 diabetes and bacterial and viral infections.

 

What do I get in donating blood?

 Health cannot be bought. A simple act of donating blood is already self-gratitude. Think about the people in emergencies that need blood in every second. One bag means saving life of another human. We feel happy that our health is going on the right direction. Once our blood is being replenished, it reduces heart disease and cancer. In our busy schedule, it helps burn calories to better blood flow.

 

For the first time blood donors, you will be going to the following process:

• Check pulse
• Blood pressure
• Hemoglobin
• Disease related to blood pressure and infectious disease
• Person who has AIDS, hepatitis or undergone any surgery
• Cancer, diabetes, cold and flu
• For pregnant women, seek your doctors advice before donating blood
• Should be well hydrated
• Wear comfortable clothes
• Eat 3 hours before your donation
• After giving donation, wait for 15 minutes
• Eat some snacks and juice to replenish your lost fluids
• Avoid heavy activities
• Lie down with feet elevated
• Apply cold compress if bruise appears

Hemochromatosis is a health condition that arises due to excess absorption of iron by the body.

• Risk of cirrhosis
• Liver failure
• Damage to pancreas
• Irregular heart rhythms

Donating blood is replenishing your blood, thus helps maintain good health by producing new blood cells.

Who can give blood?

• Good health, weigh at least 110 pounds and 17 or older
• Cannot donate if had body piercing/tattoo one year after
• Cold and flu
• Diabetes
• MSM – men who had sex with other men beginning the AIDS epidemic
• Drug users
• Transplant patients specifically animal tissue or organs
• Persons who traveled abroad that may transmit diseases such as malaria.
