We can be sure of our salvation if we are sure on what we believe in.” — Bro. Eli Soriano

Guests-inquirers did not go home empty-handed as they got answers based from the Bible during the Itanong Mo Kay Soriano segment of the program. Some of the questions asked are deemed significant and timely to discuss by the host as they may also be queries in mind by other people. The following were some of the discussed topics:
Question:  “What is the reward that was written in the Book of Life? Those deeds written, is it a list of sins?”  Luz Olemos, Church of Christ 33 A.D.

Bro. Eli:  ” It is the word God that will be the basis in judging of those things that were written in the book of life. The other question is, what does the reward by book of Revelations means? What is that reward? Are you going to be rich on earth? That is the problem of other people who are reading the Bible. Pertaining, seeing, blessing … pertaining to a reward. What comes to their minds always, what is in the Bible… it always means something earthly, the minds of those people especially of those pastors like the pastors in America being investigated for the wealth he accumulated over the years in leading his congregation. The final reward that was established by God to His servant is not here on earth.  Things that are not seen by eyes nor heard, nor entered by the hearts of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.”

Question:  “What is the sign if someone is nearly dying?”  Pip Liwar, Pentecostal

Bro. Eli:   “The farthest future we have is tomorrow. Boast not thyself of tomorrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth. Brother, it is not possible for men to know his own death. One is in a state of coma for a year but still survives.  All men faces sudden death. A man with AIDS will live for 7 years being the longest. As for other ailments would depend upon their immune systems and body conditions. The farthest future we have is tomorrow but still, man face uncertainty.”

Question :  “In this dispensation, wherein different religious denominations were sprouting like mushrooms, how can we tell if the religion we are in is the right one that teaches the true words of God?”   Mr. Romeo Cruz, a 73 year old Catholic

Bro. Eli :   “Surer and at peace. We can be sure of our salvation if we are sure on what we believe in. Teaching what exactly the Bible says. Not a single word is diminished; there is not a single mention of the word purgatory, limbo, and rosary… there is none. These were not even mentioned in the Bible. As a Christian and believer, we should be certain in what we believe in.”

Question :  “If ever I decide to be affiliated to your religion, can you give me an assurance of promised salvation based on the Bible? The second one concerning the pastors is, that members should see some signs if the one’s leading them is truly a man of God?”  Mr. Luisito Perez, an INC member

Bro. Eli  :  ” At first, God had made man upright but the devil corrupted their minds. Manalo said that outside your church, there is no salvation. How about those people who had not even heard Manalo’s preaching? Are they bound to hell? Manalo started preaching in 1913, how about beyond 1913, is there no salvation for those people? If it is the case, then his father and mother who is not baptized in his religion would not be saved!”

“To God, even to those people who had not heard of Him nor His preachings, but do good works will receive salvation. What I can say is, in the religion in which I am leading, yes, you can receive salvation by abiding God’s teachings. Those teachings that is found in the Bible. Yes, you can attain salvation. What I want to reiterate is that, we do not have the right to judge those people that have not reach by the teachings in the Bible, even to think that those people would go straight to hell is merciless.”

These are few of the many inquiries answered by Bro. Eli during the event. Ang Dating Daan started its broadcast as early as 1980 over the radio and 1983 on television. Since then, the program continued to serve its audiences by using the internet in propagating the word of God presently airing over UNTV.  The program assisted by Kuya Daniel Razon, had opened its arms to the needy and setting a good example to the society, living by its theme,  Shaping a Nation Zealous of Good Works.

cross-examination of Bro. Eli to Mr. Catarinen

“Sa kabila ng mga pang-iinsulto ni G. Catarinen, pinatatawad ko na siya. Kahit sinabi pa niyang masasama ang taga-Dating Daan.” – Bro. Eli Soriano

“Despite Mr. Catarinen’s insulting words and even saying that the members of Ang Dating Daan is evil, I forgive him… “ – Bro. Eli Soriano

Mr. Catarinen had been bashing and throwing hurtful words to his person, thus, saying malicious words to the organizers halfway the event.

The Topic:   I will prove that our Lord Jesus Christ s the founder of the true church and He is also the owner of the true church based on the Bible.

Bro. Eli implies that the Church is an entity. A group that the Father owns. People around the globe witnessed and definitely learned a lot from the debate, even the moderator, who admitted and understood the essence of who owns the church. The church is an entity owned by the Father.

1 Peter 2:9 — But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light;

Colosians 1:18  He is also the head of the body, the church; He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He might come to have first place in everything.

To close the debate, Bro. Eli has this to say: “May God bless us all, and may we continue to quest for the truth as long as we live. Triumph belongs to God. Glory belongs to God.”

A Tragic Vow to the Black Nazarene

A vow turned into tragedy. The director of the Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council [MDRRMC] Johnny Yu confirmed that a member of the Hijos del Nazareno, Renato Guryon, 44, died on the day of the procession  in January 9, 2015 while managing a sea of devotees wanted to have the chance to wipe or touch the Black Nazarene’s feet. Seeking for healing, personal requests and good fortune was the main reason for this clamor to get close to the statue. Guryon and the group were securing the carriage since Thursday night which aggravated their fatigue.

“Have we understood them well enough and guided them properly? have we communicated to the ‘devotees’ properly?”  — Msgr. Jose Clemente F. Ignacio,  Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene

For 494  years of Catholic existence in the Philippines since it was first introduced on a Sunday of March 31st,  it is such an interesting surprise to know that the rector and parish priest of the Quiapo Church, Msgr. Jose Clemente F. Ignacio, through the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene, an article entitled, Understanding the Devotion to the Black Nazarene, he wrote that they, too, is still to understand the devotees kind of spirituality, “We understand the apprehensions of our brothers in the ministry because we, ourselves, have not fully understood the depths of this devotion. And admittedly, when emotions run too high without reason, fanaticism sets in. ”

The devotees were looking for the following:

  • miraculous healing
  • transformation of spirit and personality
  • they were believed to be holy places where miracles happen and prayers were heard.

The parade of the Black Nazarene originally came from Mexico. A long been tradition that the Filipinos adopted. The color came about when the boat caught on fire that made the once white statue to a burnt one. Now, it is carried off by a gold carriage and the devotees wore maroon. This is held yearly at Quiapo, Manila.

A belief that whosoever touch the Black Nazarene will be healed and devotees from different parts of the country and tourists alike rub and kissed the Nazarene. The lighting of candles, performing mass, changing of clothes, holding the Nazarene, novena, parade, taking off foot-wears and walking in knees are some of the rituals that majority of the devotees do in the anticipation of the actual parade.

Devotees believed that it is the place that God showers his blessings in the church. But time passed that most attendees present in Quiapo came not to worship. Many of them came to sell souvenir items. Small and big replicas of the Black Nazarene — made out of plastic, wood and stones. But the most common is the handkerchief which devotees rub to the feet and face believed to heal anything that touches it.

Taking time to a “holy” event that vendors dug in to this occasion to produce some money and others for sentimental reason for the thousands of devotees gathered around the country. This festivity is held every 9th of January. The devotees joins the parade “barefoot” as a sign of humility.
The Metro Manila Development Authority [MMDA] set a traffic rerouting scheme for the Friday’s procession.

Although the government had set some rules and rerouting schemes, still people are injured and many are suffocated due to the massive crowd that circled the Black Nazarene just to get a hold and wipe off its feet. Dr. Eric Tayag, Health Assistant Secretary said that 1,686 patients had already been attended as of 6 p.m. and that does not include the hours after the parade.

Here are some of the reactions of our fellowmen of last year’s event:

At the end of the day, it is us who make our life decisions. It’s just a matter of principle. What is right and what is just. What is clear and what is just absurd.

Rev. Anton Pascual, Executive Director of Caritas Manila and head of the papal visit subcommittee on media relations said in an interview of the Asian Journal that the Black Nazarene feast is a dry-run for the up-coming papal visit of Pope Francis.  “Yes, the Black Nazarene fiesta is a dress rehearsal for the papal visit, especially the culminating mass at Quirino Grandstand in Luneta, manila on January 18.

It is just so sad that the feast that supposed to have healing miracles is also an event that caused another his life and to others, injuries.

It had been long practiced but what does the Bible says in these occasions?

Totoo bang ang pagluhod sa mga larawang inanyuan o graven image ay paggalang lang daw at hindi pagsamba?
